Challenge Russell Design was first hired by the prestigious engineering firm, Thornton Tomasetti, in 2006 to design its annual report. We have now collaborated on eleven consecutive annual reports. It has been a remarkably fruitful and creative two-way collaboration. Conceptually, the reports have ranged widely, from simple portfolio presentations to hard hitting thought leadership. The consistent challenges of the assignment have been to bring the firm to life, to make things real and to always feature the unexpected.
Solution At first we designed reports that featured the firm’s incredible projects from around the world, although it soon became apparent that this was better accomplished on their website. Our focus then moved to how they worked, how they collaborated with clients and other partners, how important long-term relationships were – all with a strong emphasis on people. As the AEC industry has consolidated and been transformed by technology, our focus shifted to highly conceptual themes including innovation, integration and diversity. The reports started out with strong project photography and models, and then moved into a phase of photojournalism. More recently, conceptual photography, illustration and even cartoons have portrayed the firm.
